Something special for learners

Published on 26 May 2019

The National Schools Festival runs from 25-30 June in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown). There is a jam-packed programme on its way and learners will experience an intensive, immersive, fun arts experience in the company of their peers from across South Africa.

  • If you’re a teacher and would like to book your learners into the Schools’ Festival, fill in the online form here

Registration

You need to complete a form giving us your school details and letting us know how many learners will be attending. It costs just R820 per learner for the full programme – which will include at least 9 productions and 5 workshops, as well as options to attend talks, art walkabouts, film screenings and a visit to the Village Green.

Accommodation

If you’re from out of town, Rhodes has an excellent value-for-money all-inclusive offer of R2215 – residence accommodation and all meals for the full period. For more info, contact c.avery@ru.ac.za or complete the accommodation booking form here.

Workshops

Along with workshops that cover drama and performance art, dance and music, this year we are also offering workshops and lecture-dems on topics such as music theatre, visual art, film, bubbleology (yes, it’s a thing), hip hoprap, creative writing, VR, digital art and more.

Walkabouts & Talks

We have arranged walkabouts through two major exhibition spaces and interested learners can meet and engage with some of the artists and curators; we’re offering guided tours through Creativate’s exciting digital arts exhibition; and we’ve lined up some fascinating speakers to address learners on various topics from comedy to choreography.

Productions

Performances include a wide choice from the Festival Programme, including work from Mike van Graan, Mandla Mbothwe, Jemma Kahn and Brett Bailey. Productions will include music theatre, dance, drama, film, music and comedy.

Choices

If you have registered, you will receive a full schedule very shortly so that your learners can make their choices for workshops. Once you receive this, please return it ASAP to ensure your learners get their first choices.
