African vernacular knowledges reveal a deep regionality in the techne culture of particular cultural forms. In an extended community research encounter with Dr Tegan Bristow, Alex Coehlo, Russel Hlongwane, Joao Roxo, an unpacking of vernacular algorithms and algorithmic thinking explored patterns in vernacular and traditional artwork from KwaZulu and Mozambique.
In extension and alongside a presentation on the 2018 Fak’ugesi Festival theme, “Tap Your Afro Source Code”, and the Digital Imaginaries: Premonition exhibition at the Wits Art Museum, Dr Bristow presents on this research in relation to the histories of ethno-mathematics and algorithmic thinking from Africa.
