DUO KP represents a coming together of two of South Africa’s leading young performers. Khanyisile Mthethwa – Flute, and Peter Cartwright – Piano, are both based in Johannesburg and formed the Duo with the intention of performing not only established repertoire for the flute and piano, but to explore jazz, tango and popular music. The two concert programmes will showcase this combination, demonstrating instrumental virtuosity combined with chamber music sensitivity in a format that will be accessible to diverse audiences.
The first concert programme showcases a French music for flute and piano. Jolivet’s “Chant de Linos”, an ancient Greek mourning chant based on the mythological musician Linus, opens the programme, followed by Messian’s “Le Merle Noir” (the Blackbird), which represents his early explorations of imitating bird song through music. Cesar Franck’s monumental Sonata for Flute and Piano in four movements closes this programme.
The second concert programme is inspired by Latin and popular music which will open with Mike Mower’s “Sonata Latino” which represents various musical styles from South America including Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Tango and Bossa Nova. This will be followed by music from Astor Piazzolla, who pioneered ‘Nuevo Tango’, incorporating jazz and classical elements into traditional tango music of Argentina. The programme closes with some lighter arrangements of popular songs.
