DUO KP: Music from Russia, Georgia and South Africa
Company: Khanyisile Mthetwa and Peter Cartwright
A beautiful piano and flute duet that takes us through a journey of different sounds, songs and ages. – Spotlight
DUO KP, with Khanyi Mthetwa (flute) and Peter Cartwright (piano), perform sonatas and concert pieces from Russia, Georgia and South Africa.
Prokofiev’s sonata represents his taste for colour and contrast, depth and virtuosity, showcased in neo-classical forms. Otar Taktakishvili’s work in the same form, composed during Soviet isolation during the Cold War, is one of his best known and draws heavily on Eastern European folk music.
These works will be interspersed with contemporary works by South African composers. Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Mabalêl Fantasy is based on the tragic story of Mabalêl, who is taken by a crocodile when she fetches water from a pool. Conrad Asman’s One Lingering Quasar depicts an enormous celestial object as it wanders through the cosmos. The concert ends with Angola, a work by South African jazz legend Bheki Mseleku.
DUO KP’s first appearance at the National Arts Festival last year won the pair a Standard Bank Ovation Award.
