Do you want international exposure for your work in theatre for young audiences (TYA)? Do you want to engage with artists from across the globe in learning about TYA in an intercultural context? In May 2017, ASSITEJ SA hosted a massive international event, the 19th ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival, Cradle of Creativity – the first time that this event had been hosted on the African continent. The Cradle of Creativity brought African creativity in TYA to the fore, celebrating the work of African artists, and providing a rich intercultural exchange for artists, delegates and audiences from over 70 countries across 12 days, packed with delights and inspiration. The event has had a significant impact in terms of artist sustainability and growth. Numerous South African artists have been invited to tour their work internationally and to collaborate with artists from other parts of the world on exciting new projects.
ASSITEJ SA will build on the success of this event by inaugurating a biennial Cradle of Creativity festival. This international TYA festival will retain key components of the original event on a smaller scale, and will embed and grow the impact of intercultural exchange on theatre for young audiences in South Africa. The new festival will take place for the first time at the Baxter theatre centre from 20-25 August 2019.
