Charmaine Haines The limited edition of 100 vessels reflects the artist's intention to embrace a single vessel shape and explore the potential of that form. The vessel shapes are altered to incorporate sculptural and semi-relief elements. Coloured stains and natural oxide washes are used to further exemplify the manipulative and expressive quality of the clay surface, including carving and textures showing a strong sense of surface pattern - through abstraction and symbolism.

Anthony Harris The artist uses the landscape as a metaphor. His work explores the complexity of the terrain in ways that challenge the viewers' own boundaries of romanticising something that is, or may occur in the future - moving beyond our preconceived human perceptions. These landscapes hold within them aspects other than pure nature - the panorama is composed of elements that bear witness to change and evolution. INITIATION SYMBOLS
Gustav Kaltenbrun I have chosen initiation symbols as the theme of this exhibition as in all cultures of the world, symbols communicate power, and in Africa, some initiation rituals are composed almost entirely of symbols. In South Africa the Sesotho-speaking shaman are the organizers of initiation rituals. They use powerful symbols to transform adolescent youth to adulthood in isolated bush schools, mainly in the southern Free State. ..The rituals which last for several weeks consists of elaborate charades, dancing, singing, drumming and body mutilation (circumcision). Each stage of the Sesotho initiation ritual is a performance art, directed by shamans and acted by initiates who, with the help of the shades die, and are re-born into adulthood. Because it is a traditional ritual with a long history, the meaning or message of some of the symbols may have been forgotten but symbols often by-pass conscious consideration triggering deeply embedded subconscious responses which speak to all of us in a powerful way. |
Khulumani Support Group Remembering Dis(re)membering is a comic art exploration by three young South Africans with the Khulumani Support Group on the complex and fragile relationship between past and present; old and young; remembering and forgetting; present and future; mourning and healing. The exhibition addresses the way so many South Africans have had to banish themselves into an internal exile to overcome a psychic dissonance between past and present. It asks the questions, "How do we remember our painful past? Must we even remember? How can we retain something sacred when so much seems to be desecrated by our own understandable need to celebrate victories and achievements? Rural Reflections
J Bussiahn and F Mulder A small painting of a bride encapsulates much of what Justine Bussiahn’s practice as a painter is all about. Painting à la prima, she captures the fleeting moment, diffused with light but loaded with a sense of fate. The act of painting for her is a meditation, but also a constant challenge to her ability to solve technical and aesthetic problems. Her media include oil on canvas, charcoal (mainly observational studies) and brush drawing. The human figure is a central pre-occupation and a solid background in drawing and fundamental commitment to paint are part of her legacy from the Grahamstown Group: she studied under Robert Brookes and Noel Hodnett. Her work is based on close observation and a critical response to lived experience: she was born into a farming family in the foothills of the Winterberg mountains (near Adelaide, Eastern Cape) and now lives on another farm 10kms up the road. Bussiahn’s worldview is coloured by a sense of transitoriness and impending loss. Loss is also expressed in her fascination with the lost, fictional world of the 1950s. In the snapshots, her grandparents “always looked so happy.” Her late grandmother’s pink hat features in Self Portrait , a study which vibrates with distress. Bussiahn has three young sons all under the age of five years and depends on the assistance of a nursemaid. Her numerous painterly investigations of the archetypal parent/child relationship are prompted by the problematic mother/infant/surrogate triangle. In this series of paintings, the parent figure (often the surrogate) appears monolithic but paradoxically transparent and anonymous while the infant is sometimes opaque. The theme develops as metaphor in her studies of goats with their powerful mothering instinct and group dynamic. Her studio window opens directly on to a goat kraal: “The goat symbolises the creative regeneration that I have experienced recently,” she says. During her child-bearing years, she feared she had lost her art. Now she says, “In fact, my children have given it back to me.” Justine Bussiahn (neé Bennett) was born in 1975. As a Victoria Girls’ High School pupil, she attended art classes at the Carinus Art Centre in Grahamstown. She completed a Fine Art degree (majoring in painting) at Rhodes University in 1997 and a Higher Diploma in Education the following year. She has since taught Art and Xhosa at various schools and continues to teach both adults and children. Drawing & paintings |
Receding Moments
Martin Glover A debut photographic exhibition by sculptor Martin Glover in which he makes images of everyday moments which once captured frequently tend to assume further layers of meaning beyond their apparent ordinariness. Inevitably the viewer’s personal background will determine how each image is interpreted and experienced. Included in this exhibition are the first photographs in the “water suited” series which reveal some of the normally invisible imagery of water in motion.
