In the vast Namib wastes a stranger in a long black coat hitches lifts along the endless road. Soon the wasteland is littered with corpses and the last policeman (Zakes Mokae) in the small town of Bethany is faced with a mystery which threatens his mortal soul. A young woman on the run from a broken marriage in Johannesburg picks up the hitchhiker and becomes part of a dance of death with a Soultaker. The policeman, assisted by his former superior (William Hootkins), an Afrikaner now leaving the police force, and an ex-drive-in projectionist and sangoma (John Matshikiza) struggle to come to terms with a threat that is beyond human.
